Description
There is little information on the artist Franz Karl Tielker. He was trained as a painter and printmaker, executing several prints after major portraitists. This portrait was done after the painting by Johann Heinrich Schroder created ca. 1795. Carl (Karl) Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick (German: 1735 - 1806) was a military leader and the ruler of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. His leadership stance as a "benevolent despot" who enacted economic reform to restore the state's finances, as well as his military prowess, made him a respected ruler. He was a decorated Field Marshall in the Prussian Army and was widely celebrated by Britain for his allyship during the Seven Years War. There are several versions of this particular portrait, including an oval miniature that accompenies another of his wife, Princess Augusta of Great Britian.
