A posthumous portrait of Christina Stiglizin (Steiglitz) and her granddaughter Johannen Christinen Stiglizin, who both died on February 28 in 1718 according to the engraved text beneath the image. Framed on the wall behind them is a portrait of Johannen's mother, and Christina's daughter-in-law, Johannen Rosina Stiglizin, nee Winckler. Johannen Rosina was married to the mayor of Leipzig, Christian Ludwig Stiglizin; this portrait was likely comissioned by him.
Engraved posthumous portraits were not unusual in the 17th and 18th centuries among the upper classes. Not to be confused with the popular postmortem portraits taken with the advent of photography, so popular in Victorian times, these portraits were more emblematic of the person in life.
