Description
A stone pathway in the gardens of the early 14th century Daitoku-ji Zen temple complex in Kyoto, Japan. Saito created many images of this temple's courtyards, and two compositions of this same scene but from a slightly different angle. Temple courtyards and gardens were a frequent subject for Saito in the mid 20th century, and he deftly captured the simplicty, peace, and stillness that the builders of the medieval-era Zen temples often strived for.
