British print scholar Malcolm Salaman notes on page 6 of 'Fine Prints of the Year, 1929': "Mr. Kenneth Holmes, a most able designer, as he shows by practice in his prints as well as in his successful teaching, has done some very interesting things this year....in 'Harbour Steps', using his drypoint with a Bone-like sparkle, he has cleverly brought into harmonious relation the crowded street and all the frontage leading down to Bridlington harbour..."
"Bridlington Harbour" is located on the North Sea in Bridlington, a civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is the largest lobster fishing port in Europe and is also a major tourist destination. There is a stream called the 'Gypsy Race' that flows through the town and joins the North Sea in the harbor.
This composition, viewed from the South Pier, is a beautiful example of the artist's abilities to so successfuly use negative space and delicate line to create a sense of volume and drama noting an everyday moment in time.
