Description
Created to promote tourism in post-WWII Japan, Hasegawa's ukiyo-e images of "maikos"--or apprentice geishas--were popular collectibles published by famed Kyoto publishing house Uchida. "Maiko" train primarily in Kyoto and Western Japan, becoming geisha once they've mastered the dances of the "geiko" (geisha), and mastering the Kyo-kotoba (Kyoto dialect) and instruments such as the shamisen.
