Description
A very rare color woodcut by M.E. Butler, done in England before her move to Pietermaritburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where she died in 1937.
Butler's work shows the influence of the early British color woodcut artists, who printed in the Japanese manner. The major teacher of color woodcut was British printmaker Frank Morley Fletcher who went on to teach a generation of woodcut artists in Edinburgh, Scotland and later in Santa Barbara, California.
