Description
This is from a sketchbook series of ink drawings Wall did in Paris in 1954. Claire Carlevaro illustrates 2 similar works on pages 179 and 181 of her publication "Love of the Stone", 2007.
Wall used a brush and ink to attack the paper, composing a gestural, abstract expressionist portrait that evokes a cross between a figurative Franz Kline and a sumi painter. She adds spatter with the brush and printed with a small dotted stamp matrix to create a background for the composition.
