The building of the castle was begun about 1240 and a settlement arose beneath the castle.
At the beginning of the 20th century the town’s inhabitants were mostly German and, in 1938, the region was annexed by Nazi Germany. After the end of World War II, the town was returned to Czechoslovakia. The Czech name is Krumlov and the German name was Krumau. The town was built over many centuries and its structures, mostly Gothic, Renaissance, or Baroque in style, are a major tourist draw.
