Aksel Karl Jorgenson (also spelled Jorgensen) was known for his deft technical talent and ability to capture the mood of a scene, no matter what medium he worked in. Known primarily for his woodengravings and oil paintings, he was equally adept at etching, watercolor, and more. He would go on to found the graphics department at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and help promote printmaking as a fine art.
Here, he renders a bright wintery Scandinavian scene in minute detail. The foreground is a snow-blanketed field dotted with trees; the midground features a canal on which a boat travels; the backgrouns is a series of low-lyng structures silhouettes against a cloudy sky. Jorgenson's keen sense of tonailty and contrast creates elegant drama on the plate.
