The Tower of David, also called the Citadel, is an ancient fortification near the Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. Its beginnings are rooted in the 5th century and its current iteration includes architectural elements of the Mamluk and Ottoman empires, as well as vestiges of the Crusades. It was the hub of several significant political and religious historical events and is a major archeological site; today it is a popular tourist destination, as well as a venue for events in the visual and performing arts.
Here, Max Pollak shows the formidable Ottoman minaret in the upper left with the city walls running alongside the Jaffa Road. A stretch of green growth pops out against the tan and white stone of the city’s structures, a welcome site in the desert terrain.
