Description
Rarance is how Max Pollak spelled Rarancze, the German spelling of Ridviski, or Rarancza, a village in Chernivtsi Oblast, Ukraine. It was the site of an historical battle between Hungary and Russia in 1916 and another between the Polish Legionnaires and Austria-Hungary in 1918. It stands to reason that Pollak, who was deployed as a war artist with the Austrian Army at this time, was stationed there during these trials. This was among the many images he drew of local people in the regions he traveled to.
