Marine painter and illustrator Carlton T. Chapman did this peaceful monotype late in his career, 1921. It was done plein air at sunset near Perrysburg, Wood County, Ohio, looking down the Maumee River. Chapman creates a small luminous, impressionistic composition with sketchy drawn lines and quickly appied color that appears to capture a moment in time - seconds later it would be completely different.
This is inscribed "to Thomas Stevens" in the margin before the signature and is dated in the left margin.
