A Modernist, regionalist image depicting the Cortland St./9th Avenue El train station in New York, NY. As evidenced in this lithiograph, Freeman was especially known for his dramatic New York cityscapes that utilized heavy contrast to convey architectural grandness. This station was built in 1918; in 1976 it was renovated and renamed the Cortland St./World Trade Center station.
This image has incidentally become an historic record of New York, as the portion of the railway that this station connected to ran beneath what would become the World Trade Center. It was damaged beyond repair in the collapse of the twin towers and was demolished and completely removed by early 2002.
