Description

A typical Italianate genre scene by noted Dutch etcher and painter Karel Dujardin. Though born and educated in Amsterdam, he is often more associated with Italian artists as he spent the majority of his life there. He was greatly inspired by the landscapes and rural life, and frequently depicted farm animals in his etchings.

According to the British Museum, Charles Naudet, whose signature is found on the verso, was a late 19th and early 20th century English printseller, publisher, and engraver, who worked as a porter of the Musee de Monuments Francais. He retired in 1807 to focus full time on publishing. Naudet signed all of the works that he owned - or claimed to own - on the verso as seen here (also see: Lugt 1937). Interestingly, he was viewed "as a charlatan by another dealer, Daudet, in 1806". His son, Thomas-Charles Naudet, was also involved in the publishing world and is better known than his father.
