One of nine sacri monti (sacred mounts) in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions of Northern Italy, Sacro Monte of Varese is topped by the Santuario di Santa Maria del Monte, a Christian sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is the final destination for religious pilgrimage after visiting the fourteen chapels that line the mountain’s Holy Road. John Taylor Arms shows the mount in relation to its surroundings, flanked by a steep valley and threaded with winding roads. Italian cypress stand like sentinels throughout. Descending down from the Sanctuario is the medieval village of Santa Maria del Monte. The mount is now a part of the Campo de Fiori park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
