John Taylor Arms chose a narrow street flanked by centuries-old stone apartments in the historic center of Pisa, Tuscany to illuminate the charm of everyday structures and life in Italy. A contrast to his usual monumental fare, the little street of Via dei Facchini invokes the classic sense of intimate city life, with laundry strung across the small chasm that the buildings form. The street itself appears crooked, a meandering and slightly off kilter path that was never meant for today’s mechanisms. Many of our contemporary vehicles wouldn’t be able to maneuver such a road. Instead, it hosts strollers, cyclists, and motorcycles.
Via dei Facchini nears the Arno River in Pisa from the south, between the Ponte Solferino and Ponte di Mezzo bridges. Though mainly residential, it hosts bars and is near to the Palazzo Blu Center for the Arts, making it a hub for art and music enthusiasts.
