Lisieux is a commune in the Calvados department of Normandy, France. The town was originally a gallic settlement more than 2000 years ago and there are places of interest from both medieval times and the 19th century. Lisieux is best known as a very important pilgrimage center for devotees of Sainte Thérèse. Arms’ etching Sunlight and Shadow is the first title listed by Fletcher in the catalogue raisonné of Arms’ prints. The inexperience of the etcher can be noted in the shop sign: Arms forgot to incise the words backwards on his plate. He was, however, successful in producing a memento of the commune that was partially destroyed during the battle to liberate France in 1944.
