In this etching, John Taylor Arms depicted the bell tower of St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Lavenham, England. The original church was rebuilt in the 14th century but it was reconstructed between 1485 and 1525. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of Late Perpendicular Gothic architecture in England and it was one of the last churches to be completed before the English Reformation. The bell tower, so prominent in Arms’ etching, was begun in 1486 and completed in 1495. The tower ring comprises eight bells and the bell has been described as “the finest toned bell in England, probably in the world.”
