Description
Barbara Johnson was known for her muted palette, taking inspiration from the coastal cities where she lived, especially in the second half of her life when she spent time in both Japan and the U.S. As well, her use of muted colors, especially in the woodcut medium, remained a staple that veiled the bold lines of her imagery in a soft impenetrability. Here, she shows a flock of seagulls making their way past a jutting rock that emerges from the sea, with Johnson's quiet colors merging as if seen through fog.
