Cawdor Castle is located in the Cawdor parish of Nairnshire, Scotland. Its tower dates primarily to the 15th century, though some stonework dates to the late 1300s. It was built around a living holly tree, which were considered symbols of good fortune. The trunk remains in the lower level of the tower. Cawdor Castle is currently home to the Dowager Countess Cawdor and is a major tourist attraction, famed for its gardens and the excellent preservation of both the interior and exterior. Here, the artist depicts the castle as seen from the River Findhorn.
Also known as Louis Weirter, the printmaker was an original member of the Scottish Society of Etchers and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Paris Salon, and various other worldwide print exhibitions.
