Description
From the National Galleries of Scotland: "The exercise of giving visual life to small figures and objects seemed to fascinate Cameron. The sculpture shown in this print was modelled by Giovanni da Bologna (Giambologna, c.1524–1608). It was originally used as a sconce, or light fixture, mounted on the corner of Palazzo Vecchietti in Florence. The Palazzo’s façade was entirely modelled by Giambologna in 1578, when he probably included his bronze cast of the Little Devil or ‘Diavolino’. The original bronze is now in the Museo Stefano Bardini in Florence. Cameron may have seen this on his trip to Italy in 1900. Through Cameron’s line the little bronze devil has been given a fleshy and lifelike character."
