Millard and Mary Sheets traveled to West Africa in February of 1979. While there, Mary wrote a journal documenting their experiences and Millard painted a series of watercolors of the landscapes, people, and folkarts that they came across. Upon their return to their hometown of Gualala, California, they published the book A West African Journal which was illustrated by Millard with black and white vignettes, a color reproduction for the cover, and an impression of this original lithograph as frontispiece. The frontispieces were numbered in an edition of 250; this impression appears to have been printed separately and comes from an edition of 25.
