Description
A stunning adaptation of the painting by her husband A.C. Leighton's painting, this being one of two different colorways created by Barbara "Barleigh" Harvey Leighton in the ukiyo-e print style. Rose and gold morning light illuminates a wintery landscape, adding warmth to the scene. There is an image of "Mount Assiniboine" and a biography of Barleigh in "Images of the Land: Canadian Block Prints 1919-1945"; 1984; Ainslie/Glenbow Museum; ISBN 0919224407. Mount Assiniboine is located in the Mount Assiniboine National Park in British Columbia, Canada. The pyramidal peak is a noted feature among a landscape of glaciers, lakes, and alpine meadows. Known as the "Matterhorn of the Rockies," it was named for the Iyarhe Nakoda people who early French traders dubbed the assiniboine as a phonetic adaptation of the phrase "asinii-bwaan" - or "stone-boilers." The peak is celebrated for its unique silhouette and has long been a source of inspiration for artists.
