Published in collaboration with the Art Institue of Chicago, with a biographical introduction by James Johnson Sweeney, the noted Modern art curator and writer. The book is signed by Chagall on the first loose endpaper and dedicated to the poet and handwriting analyst Hazel Collister Hutchison, for whom he would later illustrate Toward Daybreak, Hutchison's most well-known book of poems.
