Description

Micah Schwaberow borrows from the 1891 painting "Poplars on the Banks of the Epte," by Claude Monet. It was one in a series of around two dozen paintings Monet executed in the summer and fall of 1891 that focused on a specific grouping of trees, their relection in the Epte river, and the light at various times of day and in different seasons. This project was paid for by the gallerist Paul Durand-Ruel for an exhibition in 1892, and this allowed Monet to purchase his home at Giverny, making way for his now-famous Water Lilies series.

As with Monet, Schwaberow was meticulous in his drive to capture a mood. In this case, he has distilled the drama and elegance of Monet's painting - specifically, just a portion of the right half of the canvas - into a tiny window, which remains faithful to the French Impressionist in its sensitive tonality.
