Mexican printmaker Angel Zamarippa Landi (also known as "Fa-Cha") chose a deep gray wove paper on which to execute this soft-ground etching of the fountain on the Zocalo, the main square in historic Mexico City, with a view from the backside of the Metropolitan Cathedral. In the lower mid-ground a couple sits close together on the edge of the fountain; in the foreground, an artist - perhaps representative of Zamarippa himself - paints the scene.
The building of the cathedral began in 1567 with completion in 1788 and it is a blend of baroque, neoclassic, and Mexican Churrigueresque architecture. The enormous weight of the building caused it to settle or sink into the soft lake bottom on which it was built.
