Clairevoie is composed of series of patterned verticals. In the background, curved black shapes float upon a yellow field and, in the foreground, outlined alkali blue and yellow shapes appear to be fixed into pillars by vertical black outlines. The viewer’s eye is pulled back and forth, and in and out of the planes, and there is incredible movement implied by the curved black shapes. Created in 1974, Hayter used a zinc plate which he covered with a thin plastic sheeting, then he cut the sheet and added a soft-ground texture. He then covered the plate again, cut the sheet, and added more soft-ground texture to the plate. Clairevoie was printed in an edition of 75. There are twenty-five artist’s proofs.
