Description
The letter C from the portfolio "An Illustrated Alphabet" by William Nicholson. Lithographs after original woodcuts by William Nicholson, 1898. Nicholson (1872 - 1949) was half of the Beggarstaff Brothers, together with James Pryde. H produced posters for commercial products and theatrical events. The style of these posters - simple shapes; flat color - became the hallmarks of Nicholson's graphic work. Nicholson created "An Illustrated Alphabet" for British publisher William Heinemann. Originally issued in a very small run of hand colored woodcuts, their popularity led to the images being transferred to lithographic stones and printed in a bound volume. The Alphabet, published in 1898 firmly established him in the public's mind and brought him immediate success.
