Description
An engraving after the painting by Anthony van Dyck of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, probably painted around 1637. The young German-English prince, already a seasoned soldier having fought at age 14 in the Dutch pas d'armes during the Eighty Years' War, was promoted to commander of the Royalist cavalry in the English Civil war at age 23. This is likely near the time when his portrait was painted by van Dyck and subsequently engraved by Snyers. The prince is portrayed in a formal half-length portrait in fashionable attire, holding a baton in his right hand.
