An image of the Great Stone Church ruins in the Spanish mission San Juan Capistrano, in Orange County, California. The Greco-Roman style chapel was built out of stone in 1797, the only chapel building of the time not to be made of adobe. Various earthquakes in the early 1800s led to its destruction and finally the building of new structures that would envelope the stone chapel, using adobe and other sturdy materials already known to withstand earthquakes.
