In 1940, as the WPA was being disbanded, the San Francisco Chronicle began an unusual and innovative project called Contemporary Graphics. This project commissioned and published original lithographs in editions of 150 which were advertised and offered for sale in the Sunday Chronicle for $5.00 each. The U.S. was coming out of the Depression and moving toward WWII and there were few sales. This lithograph was on of five offered for sale on March 10, 1940. The others were by H. Volz, R. Bertrand, R. Kadish and Arthur Murphy.
