Lucien Hector Jonas did a portfolio of 25 large lithographs titled "Les Grandes Vertus Francaises" (The Great French Virtues) between 1914 and 1916. They chronicled France's involvement in WWI between the years of 1914 through 1916 as the Germans moved into France from Luxembourg and Belgium.
This image, plate 23, is titled "Prisoners of War" is from a section of the portfolio titled "Resignation" and depicts a seated German soldier pointing a stick at a wounded soldier while in the background are a group of other prisoners and tents. The prisoners appear resigned to their fate.
From a special edition of 50, this impression was printed using chine collé, a thin oriental paper that is collaged to a support sheet. The coat tails of the prisoner at the left extended beyond the china paper and the composition was completed by the artist, drawing with litho crayon. The artist also adds a hand drawn 'remarque' in the lower right, an exhausted soldier, trudging forward with his rifle slung over his shoulder.
