Cor de Wolff was a part of the Dutch artists’ group satirically called “The Populists,” a collective of artists whose aim was to record the daily lives of the ordinary people of Holland, Amsterdam, and elsewhere through an apolitical lens, rejecting the romanticization of struggle and instead upholding small, working class joys that they felt were worthy of note,"Art for the People."
This composition was created using carved white lines and leaving a black background, which is printed. De Wolff depicts a get-together of the "Dry Anglers Club", a figure on the bridge fishes, not in the canal below, but on the bank, next to a tree. Revelers approach from both directions, holding banners that proclaim "The Dry Anglers Club" and "The Perch". The participants all appear to be men.
