This depiction of the front porch of noted arts patron Lydia Coonley Ward in Wyoming, New York, was originally carved and printed in 1917 in an edition of ten proofs. A later edition was printed with a black block included and some other minor changes around 1935. This impression sits in between, dated '19, and was printed after Baumann had moved to Santa Fe.
Baumann would later note, "While the house was one of those simple country places with accommodations for forty guests, there was no remembering how many faculty and student guests Mrs. Ward had invited to stay that any over flow had to be diverted to the nearby village. There were actors, artists, teachers, and professors of this and that. I wish I could recall them by name. On Sunday mornings after a selected evening reading by Mrs. Ward, the Zoellner Quartet played Bach music out-of-doors as I have never heard it. Listening to it all was like sharing a dream with others buffeted about by the uncertainties of professional careers." - p. 200, In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann
