Description
In 1927 Baumann took an auto trip from Santa Fe through the desert of Arizona and then to California. Starting in Southern California he drove up the coastline. This gouache was done during that trip and was included in a series of gouaches and pastels he titled “Random Sketches From Here and There.” The Laguna Beach Presbyterian Church was under construction in 1927 when Baumann did this gouache. It still exists, with additions at 415 Forest Avenue in Laguna Beach, which was founded in 1927. Baumann used these gouaches as references for many of his woodcuts though many, such as this, were never finished as a woodcut. They were drawn on a dark brown wove paper. Baumann did not sign the gouaches but did sign, title and date the mat.
