Description
The alternative title to this piece is "Martins Are Back," a nod to one of the signs of spring in the Midwest, the Martin swallows, which appear in the upper left quadrant of the image. In the mid-ground is the Hetherington Cabin, built in 1860 and still standing. This impression was used to illustrate the third and final edition in In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann (cat. 38.2). Noted Baumann, "The road up Jackson's Branch to the Hetherington Cabin wandered over a creek bed with limestone steps. On this occasion the water making little pools trickled over them on its way up to the river." (p. 180)
