Gustave Baumann created numerous floral studies in gouache and graphite. For this Phlox study, he cropped the image into an octagon format by painting a black line. Within this line he painted a gold line on six of the sides, which he then embellished with a series of black dots. This is painted on the gray-brown wove paper Baumann used for his gouaches and pastels and is from the Gustave Baumann estate. This work is unsigned as were most of his gouache studies.
