Description
Among the relatively few images of the ocean in Baumann's oeuvre, "Point Lobos" elegantly captures his admiration of the Pacific and most particularly of the Central California coast. Notes Chamberlain on page 395 of In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann, 'This spectacular ocean shoreline is probably the most recognizable spot on the California coast. Artists have memorialized Point Lobos in photographs, oil, watercolors, drawings, and prints. Today this location is known as the Point Lobos State Reserve and is considered the crown jewel in the California state park system.'
