Description
From the second edition printed in 1931, a departure in mood and color from its 1927 predecessor makes this "Cottonwoods" a strong representation of late fall, with a simplified palette and a decluttering of the scene. Chamberlain quotes Baumann: "Scraggly cottonwoods, white and gaunt with dark scrubby pinon and cedar intersecting the long lines of the flat mesa. ...Other than these scarcely a sign of life except newly made trails leading to the ever present meeting house or morada, in this, the country of the Penitente." (p. 341, In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann)
