Dorr Bothwell did this portrait of her colleague, Modernist artist Lorser Feitelson in 1939 in Los Angeles.
In 1934 Dorr Bothwell moved from San Diego to Los Angeles to immerse herself in the post-surrealism scene spearheaded by Helen Lundberg and Lorser Feitelson. It was a pivotal time for the experimental artist who soon began to work in the WPA's mural division, which Feitelson oversaw in Southern California, followed by her introduction to the art of screenprinting, which would become her preferred medium.
