Description
Dorr Bothwell drew this image of classic Northern California flora while she was living in Samoa, where she worked for two years as an artist beginning in 1928. On the exhibition label, verso, it is noted that it's drawn from memory, suggesting perhaps that Bothwell was reminiscing about her time in San Francisco, her home from 1921 until just before her excursion to the island nation. The curling forms of fiddlehead ferns, Western sword fern, and tanoak leaves are scattered around the trunk of a fallen redwood, which will act as a "nurse log" - a decaying tree that acts as a nutient-rich base for many varieties of flora to thrive.
