Description
This lithograph, plate 11 of 14 from the 1832 portfolio "Les Diableries de Lithographies" was done by Eugene LePoittevin (also called Poidevan). It was lithographed in Paris by Frey and was published in France by Aumont and in England by Charles Tilt. It was in the collection of A. Maroni (1852-1923) a noted collector of early lithography. "Diablaries," images from the dark side, have been depicted by artists, including Breughel, Goya, Callot and others. LePoittevin uses a series of vignettes in this print and in three examples draws directly from Callot's "Gobbi" of the early 1600's. He gives Callot credit by signing his name with in the images.
