Description
Augusta Rathbone traveled extensively throughout the French Riviera and translated her sketches into line etchings with color aquatint. Many of her original prints of this region were reproduced in "French Riviera Villages" published by Mitchell Kennerley in 1938. Rathbone could capture the spirit of her subject with few lines and broad, flat areas of color. Here, she has rendered an austere stone church, l'Eglise Sainte Croix de Valdeblore-Saint Dalmas, located high in the Alpes Maritimes near the Italian border about 90 kilometers from Nice. Fascinated by the angles of the architecture, Rathbone stylized the tower and the rooflines, electing to feature a side view rather than a more formal front view of the church.
