Description
A portfolio of eighteen color intaglios conceived of and printed by the Fort Mason Printmakers of San Francisco, California, under the direction of Eleanor Rappe. The theme is the 430 B.C. classical Greek writings of Herodotus collectively known as "the histories." Considered the first account of Western history, it covers not only events of human society but also accounts of the mythological world. This portfolio focuses on these histories within the context of the animal kingdom, with reference to species both real and legendary. Each print was designed, executed, and printed by the respective artist on Arches Cover wove under the supervision of Eleanor Rappe, director of the Fort Mason Printmakers program. The eighteen images are held in a linen-bound portfolio designed by Norma Erikson. Also included are a title page, an index, and sheets of text with blurbs pertaining to each image, all printed by the artists.
