Plate 2 from Maniere de Voir des Voyageurs (Way of Seeing Travelers), volume IV of the series Masques et Visages (Masks and Faces). Exact dates are difficult to determine for this impression, though it is from the first state before the text was typset below the image. Publication dates vary from 1852 to a posthumous reprinting in 1870. The text would read: "...tandis! que chaque citoyen ne doit avoir droit! qu'à une majorité conforme à sa manière de voir." (...while! that every citizen should have the right! only by a majority conforming to his way of seeing.)

This was one of a series of books illustrated by Gavarni which commented on social foibles in daily life; in this case, when traveling.
