Sepia, ochre, and black inks capture the dramatic, isolated mountain range of Skedaddle, California. Byron McClintock, whose hunt for landscape imagery to capture on the sheet has taken him throughout the contiguous United States, does away with any focus on individual objects and landmarks. Rather, he abstracts the view with rough, layered strokes of color, invoking the mood of the dry, desert-bound mountains and dramatic skies that make up the California-Nevada border.
The Skedaddle wilderness stretches across counties of Lassen County and Washoe County, Nevada, and is characterized by eroding volcanic formations and crater-like valleys that once held lakebeds. Though appearing desolate from afar, it is alive with low-lying, drought resistant species of plants such as wild rose, coyote willow, and sage.
