Johannes (Jan) Theodorus Schonk

A fine example of an Art Deco woodcut by Dutch artist Jan Schonk, done around 1925. As a result of his work in ceramics Schonk's images included many animal images, often using a white line to create the image and using the black background for a dramatic counterpoint.

After 1931 he devoted himself completely to his graphic work, which can be compared with fellow countryman M.C. Escher’s early work - large masses, varying planes, lines and forms that create rhythmic subjects.
