This impression was printed in 2003/4 by Kathy Caraccio with Remington's close scrutiny. The plate was done in 1950 and a few impressions were printed by the artist. The second printing is dated 1952 to distinguish it from the first.
This early etching is a significant marker of Deborah Remington’s immersion in the burgeoning post-war Abstract Expressionist scene of 1950s San Francisco. Despite the sense of chaos, there is mature harmony in the composition, and it begins to resemble a window thrown open onto a dark night sky, framed by the tension of contrasting textures. The feeling of controlled impulse, wherein the artist is puzzling out an idea in a physical, uninhibited manner, makes this a remarkable early-career piece and a fine example of a revolutionary era in the modern art age.
