Remnants of lace, patterned fabrics, and the imprint of delicate stemmed plants drift through this portrait of a woman who appears to be standing before a mirror or looking through a window. Bursts of star-like shapes tumble across the bottom and two small dots - one at her temple and one at her throat - enclose the shapes of babies still in the womb. A tender, haunting visage that appears personal and surreal at once.
Dick Swift's exact process for this work isn't entirely clear, as some of the linework is drawn and some appears to have been transferred onto the stone. Either way, his experimental nature is laid bare in this curious and elegant work and is exemplary of a key time in American modern art history.
