A nearly-mirrored image of two doorways, opening onto rooms respectively enshrouded in the atmospheres of night and day, invite the viewer to look more deeply in the dreamlike “Doors” by Elizabeth Quandt.
Quandt moved with ease between the thresholds of the real and the surreal. Her keen understanding of classical composition is never dulled by staid moods: every portrayal of an object, person, or landscape holds within it a mystery. In this piece she’s drawn two simple doorways opened onto two simple rooms; yet it could so easily be transformed into a journey should the viewer be prepared.
